Polypterus senegalus

Polypterus senegalus is also known as senegal bichir. It has a long body which can grow over 12 inches. The head is small and lizard like with small eyes on either side. Since its eyesight is poor, the fish hunts its preys by smell. It has a pair of lungs that allow it to gulp air from the surface of water. That is why this fish is often found jump out of water. The fish should not be kept with other smaller fish because it is a carnivore that will eat any fish that fits its mounth. The fish can stay out of water for quite a long time because the skin can remain moist. The fish is originally fro Africa.
